2015: Toronto rapper Drake dropped his surprise mixtape, If You're Reading This It's Too Late, on Feb. 13, 2015.

While Drizzy fans were waiting for his new album, the Boy dropped off the 17-track mixtape without any warning or promotion. Much like Beyonce's self-titled album in 2013, the release was completely under wraps until the moment it dropped.

The rapper tweeted out and posted the project on Facebook once it dropped and was uploaded to OVO Sound's official SoundCloud as well, but was quickly removed. With songs like "Know Yourself," "Energy," "Preach" and "Legend," If You're Reading This It's Too Late proved to be a huge success.

The surprise drop one day before Valentine's Day was available for purchase on Apple iTunes, not streamable for free like a traditional mixtape had been in the past. This means the project was counted as a part of Drizzy's contractual agreement to Birdman's Cash Money Records.

Even though it was considered a mixtape of Drake's throwaway tracks, the release was listed on many best-of lists at the year and proved to be a game-changing moment in Drake's career.
