A young man who hit a 61-year-old woman and fled the scene has now turned himself in to police.

According to WZZM and the Van Buren County Sheriffs Office, a 21-year-old man from Lawrence hit an elderly woman on his way to school January 7th on County Road 215.

The woman was found laying in a ditch and her left leg injured after being hit from behind on her way to catch a bus. She was then taken to the hospital for treatment.

The 21-year-old suspect eventually turned himself in by calling the Van Buren County Central Dispatch admitting he hit the woman with his car then fled the scene.

The driver told authorities he was on way to school and didn't want to be late and that is when he hit the woman then the driver panicked and bailed from the accident.

Authorities do not suspect drugs or alcohol to be a factor in the crash but the suspect may be charged. The case is currently under review by the 7th West Prosecutor's Office.
