Erykah Badu has teamed up with Right Productions to assist in a campaign of getting hundreds of abandoned rape kits processed in Detroit.

Badu is set to perform a concert on Aug. 12 at Chene Park Amphitheater and all of the proceeds is going to the African-American 490 Challenge. The 490 Challenge bears that name because each kit costs $490 to test. Over 10,000 rape kits were found abandoned in a Detroit Police Department storage room back in 2009 and Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has been working to get money to get the kits tested.

"This is a huge day for Enough SAID/AA490,” said Worthy in a statement (via Detroit Free Press). “Everyone knows that Erykah Badu is a major, major talent in the music and song-writing industry. For her to lend her name, talent and time to this work is nothing short of a miracle. Justice for these forgotten sexual assault victims has been given a phenomenal assist.”

According to Shahida Mausi, president and CEO of the Right Productions, $5 from each ticket told, as well as proceeds from a $100-per-ticket reception before the concert will go to the 490 Challenge. In addition, profits from a $1,000-per-person VIP reception with Badu after the show with go to the organization as well.

Badu came under fire on Twitter back in April after she voiced support for school uniforms for high school girls. After she was criticized for what many felt was promoting rape culture, the singer further explained her stance. “The response was overwhelming,” she told Fader. “I agreed with most of the points, but they didn’t apply to my conversation. People were expressing a lot of intelligent points about rape culture and how lowering skirts would not stop rape or stop men from being attracted to women. I agree with that. I was like, “You’re preaching to the choir!” However, I believe that it is not shameful to dress appropriately in certain settings—it’s helpful, not shameful. When we go swimming, we wear swimsuits. When we go to dance class, we wear dance clothes. When we’re in a professional setting where there’s a dress code, we dress within code. There’s nothing shameful or demeaning about that.”

Tickets for the Erykah Badu concert are available via Ticketmaster or by using the Chene Park mobile app. If you want to donate directly to the African-American 490 Challenge, head over to aa490challenge.org.

Props to Erykah Badu for assisting in this noble campaign.
