Fat Joe and Remy Ma Call Their New Album a Complete Masterpiece
Fat Joe and Remy Ma stopped by The Breakfast Club Wednesday (Feb. 15) to talk about the weekend’s Grammy Awards and their upcoming album Plata o Plomo. The Terror Squad duo was up for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song, but lost each, to Chance The Rapper and Drake, respectively.
After dropping their hugely successful single “All the Way Up” with French Montana in March of 2016, the pair will drop their album tomorrow, with Joe calling it a masterpiece. “This New York area, y’all better support this,” he says. “You ain’t had no major New York album come out like this in years, with the quality and the hits that’s on this, and we got the mud. And we got the dirtiest rhymes, lyrics, hardcore stuff too. This album is complete from A-Z.” Joey as well says that the album has been finished, but the success of “All the Way Up” allowed them to delay the release.
As for the Grammy losses, Remy says she wasn’t entirely expecting to win since Chance The Rapper was featured on a Grammy billboard in Los Angeles. She says she felt Desiigner should have won for Best Rap Performance and that Drake’s victory is strange, since he won for “Hotline Bling.” “I feel like we should have won Best Rap Song,” she says. “[Drake] didn’t even rap on [‘Hotline Bling’].” They give Chance props though, saying they’re both fans.
Remy as well spoke on her recent miscarriage, news she shared with fans in January. “That was definitely something I had to think about and took some coercing. To me, it was so personal,” she says. “You are embarrassed, ashamed, you feel like it’s your fault, and it’s something you don’t want to talk about.” She reiterates that husband Papoose helped her share citing the fact that other women are going through the same thing.
As for whether or not she was dissing Nicki Minaj on Phresher’s “Wait a Minute” remix, Remy says she doesn’t do subliminals. “Whenever I’ve had a problem with any female in the entire game, I will say your name,” she said. “I am going to say your government. I’m going to look it up and say your mother’s name, your father’s name, your kid’s name. I want you to know I’m talking about you.”
The interview spans longer than an hour, with Fat Joe explaining a strained relationship with a famous friend. “This guy got in trouble one time and he was gonna go somewhere. They would call me every day and I would go visit this guy, my brother, who I love, and sit with him for five-six hours, trying to stop him from committing suicide,” he said. “I thought he was my family. When I went through my problems with my taxes and all that…I could tell you about a couple of friends who tried to give me a million dollars, but man, this guy never called me, man. I would’ve never took the money…But it’ll never be the same.”
