After two years of repairs and construction, the Grand Haven south pier is officially open as of today!

And to celebrate this long-awaited moment the city is hosting a picnic and everyone is invited. Picnic on the Pier will be from 6p-8p tonight and is free to attend. Tables and chairs will be set up but you need to bring your own food and drinks.

Originally, the pier was supposed to open by the Coast Guard Fest but high water levels, this past April, delayed it even more. Officials thought it wouldn't be completed until October, but thankfully that wasn't the case and now we can enjoy the pier just as summer comes to an end.

However, because water levels have risen over the past two years you still need to be careful. Tom O'Bryan from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers told WOOD-TV

Three- to five-footers might go over top the structure, where in the past it might not have. So we always have the dangers associated with the pier that we want to get out there.
