Frank Ocean Beats Libel Suit Filed by His Father: ‘It Was a Super Sad Case’
To bring you up to speed, Ocean’s estranged father, Calvin Cooksey, sued the Grammy-winning piano man for defamation back in February following a Tumblr post he wrote about him in the wake of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, FL.
In the post, Ocean recants a moment where he was at a restaurant with Cooksey at age six, saying, "I heard my dad call our transgender waitress a f----- as he dragged me out of a neighborhood diner saying we wouldn’t be served because she was dirty.”
Cooksey in his lawsuit stated that the story was untrue and it damaged his financial opportunities in film and music. He was seeking $14.5 million in monetary damages.
On Tuesday (Oct. 17), a judge ruled against Cooksey, who represented himself in court, and said that he didn’t adequately proven his libel claims in his lawsuit.
“It was a super sad case,” said Ocean's attorney, Keith Bremer (via Pitchfork). “I am sorry that my client had to go through this and am glad that we could bring closure.”
