In the spring of 2016, news broke that iLoveMakonnen had parted ways with Drake's OVO label. Drake had signed the Atlanta rapper after remixing "Tuesday," but things didn't seem to be going so well, and though the two seemed to split on good terms, there also appeared to be bad feelings lingering.

Now, in a new interview, Makonnen confirms there was bad blood between the two. He details being at the same party as Drake in September of last year when things got awkward.

"I was threatened by others," he remembers. "Someone I so-called look up to. Saying, 'We gon fuck you up the next time we see you.' And I was like, 'Let me stop being me.' I started to go back to, 'I’m just gonna go eat anything, and just be hiding myself and shit.' And then I was like, 'No! I’m not doing that no more! I don’t give a fuck! I’m — me.' And that’s what led me to coming out and shit.

"It was in the middle of the goddamn afterparty at the Up&Down club," he continues. "Everybody that was in there was in there. I’m in here around these Vanguard Awards and I’m accepted and I took pictures with Chainsmokers and G-Eazy and everybody and we all friends. And I’m here in the middle of the floor, no security, and they coming and I just step to the side and they see me and stop and the biggest motherfucker in the game goes, woo woo woo, 'Next time I’ma fuck you up!'"

Asked who specifically approached him, Makonnen clarifies: "Around all that security, the dude that’s doing it — we have a platinum-selling record together! The guy! The leader of the crew!"

The tension seemed to arise from a Tim Westwood freestyle Makonnen had spit prior to the party. In the freestyle, he said, "Muthafuckas say I got dropped/You know that’s a muthafuckin’ lie/Only place I dropped is in my goddamn pants size.”

Throughout the interview, Makonnen also touches on Migos' comments about him coming out of the closet and says they made an apology to "save face." "And now you gotta come back with some sorry ass excuse. Nah," he says. "That’s only cause you got the #1 record and you didn’t wanna fuck it up." He also says he doesn't really talk to the Migos, but explains they were never really close like that in the first place.
