John Legend Hosts an Intimate Preview of ‘Darkness and Light’ in NYC
John Legend is keen on creating new content that isn't driven by the need to compete with the music of his past. Last night, (Nov. 14) Legend, who became a new dad back in April, invited a few hundred media executives, friends and family and fans to an intimate preview session of his sixth studio album, Darkness And Light at New York City's Samsung 837. More than excited to allow fans to preview a snippet of his album, he asked event goers to turn off their cell phones and "just enjoy the moment."
While sitting onstage opposite his interviewer, journalist Cori Murray, Legend played select tracks including, "Penthouse Floor," featuring Chance the Rapper, the dedication to his baby girl, "Right By You (For Luna);" and his latest single, "Love Me Now." Songs were heavily influenced by a number of issues--including politics and gun violence. Recorded over a year ago, Legend acknowledged that he obviously had no idea how the presidential election would turn out.
"I had no idea what was going to happen with the election. These songs were written a year ago," John told the packed venue. "You can't go into the studio thinking what can I do to top [my last hit]."
Legend also discussed why this album also reflects the current save of topical hip-hop and one artist in particular: Chance The Rapper.
"I have a lot of friends from Chicago that have worked with him before," Legend shared. "I've been a fan for a while...I just really admire him. He's so young and bold. He's a really insightful artist," he told Murray and a three-story venue filled with people.
After playing music and talking about his life, Legend performed three songs: "Love Me Now," which rang through the building as the accompanying video played on a projection screen; "Sure Fire," a never-before-heard track from the album; and he closed the night with "All of Me."
And everyone in attendance went crazy once they realized Chrissy Teigen was sitting in the audience, supporting her man.
To pre-order the album go to iTunes, and listen to select songs before the project drops.
