Kendrick Lamar's major label debut, good kid, m.A.A.d. cityis already considered a hip-hop classic by many critics, but before the album went on to sell over a million copies, the record went through multiple revisions.

In an interview with Billboard, Lamar reveals the album underwent several changes before becoming the record it is today. "We did good kid about three, four times before the world got to it," he said. "New songs, new everything. I wanted to tell that story, but I had to execute it. My whole thing is about execution. The songs can be great, the hooks can be great, but if it's not executed well, then it's not a great album."

Kendrick's need for execution also led to the song "DUCKWORTH." from DAMN. having to be re-worked. "I didn't approach it right the first two times," the rapper said. "And I knew these were my three favorite [9th Wonder] beats. I just wrote, wrote, wrote until the idea finally came."

"DUCKWORTH." was inspired by the true story of Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith planning to rob a KFC that Kendrick's father, Ducky, worked at. On the song, Kendrick details the fateful day that could have changed his life. According to the rapper, Tiffith was "touched" by the song.

In related Kendrick news, the "LOYALTY." rapper was recently nominated for nine BET Hip Hop Awards, tied for the lead with DJ Khaled and Cardi B. K. Dot is up for some of the night's biggest awards including Album of the Year, Single of the Year, MVP of the Year and Lyricist of the Year. During the 2015 show, Kendrick took home the Lyricist of the Year award, but his To Pimp a Butterfly record lost Album of the Year to J. Cole's 2014 Forest Hills Drive.
