A violent protest broke out at the campus of UC Berkeley in California on Wednesday night (Feb. 1) where a scheduled talk was supposed to be held by right-wing firebrand Milo Yiannopoulos.

According to CNN, over 1,500 protesters had gathered at Sproul Plaza, chanting and holding signs that read: "No safe space for racists" and "This is war." The violent protesters set fires near the campus bookstore, tore down metal barriers and caused a considerable amount of damage in and around the building where the event was set to take place.

UC Berkeley was the last stop on Yiannopoulos’ tour aimed at defying what he believes as an epidemic of political correctness on college campuses. The 32-year-old Breitbart editor is a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump and a self-proclaimed internet troll. He was banned from Twitter after leading a harassment campaign against actress Leslie Jones.

Early Thursday morning (Feb. 2), President Trump spoke out against the university for canceling the event. He tweeted:

Meanwhile, Yiannopoulos also commented on the protest via his Facebook page. He writes, “I have been evacuated from the UC Berkeley campus after violent left-wing protestors tore down barricades, lit fires, threw rocks and Roman candles at the windows and breached the ground floor of the building. My team and I are safe. But the event has been cancelled.”

No arrests were made throughout the night.
