A Muskegon teacher has been giving administrative leave after being charged with sexual assault of a minor.

According to FOX 17, the case goes back to 2017 and alleges Music and Choir teacher Erik Childers, is accused of inappropriate and illegal behavior involving a child.

After receiving a report regarding Childers' allegations, the school district then sent out a statement to parents and the media.

Childers was immediately placed on administrative leave and prohibited from accessing school properties.

Wednesday, Childers was arraigned on charges of criminal sexual conduct third degree with a minor.

The incident is said to have occurred before Childers was a music and choir teacher at Churchill and Ross Park elementary schools.

According to the Muskegon County Jail records, 28-year-old Childers bond is set at $50k.

A statement that was issued to the parents by Superintendent O'Brien said,

As a fellow elementary parent, I know the first thought for all of us is our own kids safety. In speaking with Chief Gale of the Norton Shores Police Department, the investigation has not revealed any other victims or crimes, however the NSPD will continue to investigate Mr. Childers and work with Mons Shores Schools to ensure the safety of all students. We are working closely with the NSPD and if at any point there is more information the community will be updated immediately.
