Fewer than half of the students were proficient in 17 of 18 subject-grade tests. Here in Grand Rapids, the students scored higher in English language arts, according to WOOD. Superintendent Teresa Weatherall Neal said, “It was only the second year of testing with M-STEP and the new test certainly posed some new challenges, but there are no excuses. The bottom line is we have to do better and we will do better. The dramatic improvements over the last four years in graduation rates, student attendance, parent engagement, and academic growth are examples of our Transformation Plan working to produce better results year after year,.”
