Don't let summer go by without at least one more road trip. One 78-acre park in Michigan is worthy of the drive. It's less than one hour from Grand Rapids and only costs $5 per vehicle!

Fitzgerald Park is in Grand Ledge next to the Grand River just west of Lansing. It's quick to get to from the highway and there is plenty to see and do.

You'll find many regular park features including picnic areas, baseball fields, an 18-hole disc golf course, sledding hill and basketball court.

The kids' play area includes a merry-go-round (you don't see those much anymore). There's also horseshoe pits and cross country ski trails.

What sets this Fitzgerald Park apart is the ledges.

Almost 300 million years ago water and sediment filled the area and created the ledges. As is often the case, the photos don't really do the ledges justice, but they still give you an idea of what to expect.

The trails bring you along the Grand River and give you an up-close view. It's fine for just about anyone from young children to those looking for a unique setting for a morning jog.

It wasn't too busy on the day we visited. My guess is crowds are rarely an issue here. The small admission fee is easily worth it. A daily pass is $5 and a yearly pass is $25. Eaton County residents pay $3 and $20.

Fitzgerald Park in Grand Ledge is open from 8am to dusk. Pets are allowed on a leash and alcohol is also allowed.
