With the success of Marvel’s Luke Cage on Netflix, it was only a matter of time before we see another black comic book superhero come to life on the small screen. Enter CW’s new series Black Lightning powered by DC Comics.

Written by co-creator Salim Akil, the drama is adapted from the 1970s DC comic book character of the same name. The series stars Cress Williams as high school principal Jefferson Pierce (aka Black Lightning) who retired from crime fighting 10 years ago. But he’s forced to reignite his secret past as a masked avenger who can harness electricity as he tries to save his family and community from street violence.

In the trailer above, you can see how crime fighting has taken its toll on Pierce's body and his family life. But with the threat of a gang trying to recruit his daughter, Pierce is forced to suit up again. The series' tagline reads, "Justice Walks Like Thunder, Strikes Like Lightning and Runs in the Family."

The CW's Black Lightning series is expected to premiere this fall. Get ready, it's about to get lit!
