The birth of hip-hop will be televised. The Netflix original series The Get Down dropped their latest trailer today (July 25) ahead of the show's premiere this August. Starring Justice Smith as the show's lead Ezekiel as well as Shameik Moore, Herizen Guardiola and Jaden Smith, The Get Down tells the tale of rap's birth in 1977 by way of the Get Down Brothers, a young rap and DJ crew from the South Bronx. First announced in February of last year, this new trailer for the 13-episode series shows a little bit more about the guys' struggle to go against the grain.

“With just a little courage, you could be something,” one of Ezekiel's teachers tell him in a sunny classroom to which he answers "I got courage." Fast forward to Ezekiel and his friends freestyling while Shaolin Fantastic (Moore) scratches on his turntable for the first time. Destined to rock the block and change music forever, the guys start to take their art seriously, even with parents and naysayers in their ears.

The Get Down is executive produced by Nas and directed by famed director Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge!, The Great Gatsby). Luhrmann said back in April that the Queens MC is a “huge creative force” in the show's process, which is clearly evident from the original soundtrack Esco provides for the upcoming project.

The music-driven drama premieres on Netflix with its first six episodes on August 12. Check out the full trailer above.
