The announcement of HBO's upcoming sci-fi series Confederate, in which a world is imagined where slavery never ended, drew outrage from Black Twitter, but another alternate history drama series has emerged from a very different and innovative perspective.

Black America has been in development at Amazon Studios for the past year, follows an alternate history where recently freed African Americans secured the southern states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama as reparations, and formed a sovereign nation called New Colonia.  With the big USA as its neighbor, the two nations have a turbulent relationship.

The Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder and Straight Outta Compton, Girls Trip producer Will Packer announced the project back in early February. However, the project was untitled at the time and the producers were hush-hush about the details.

Once HBO announced Confederate, Packer felt it was just the right time to let audiences know about Black America.

“It felt this was the appropriate time to make sure that audiences and the creative community knew that there was a project that preexisted and we are pretty far down the road with it,” Packer told Deadline.

The series is still in heavy development at Amazon Studios and has not been given a release date yet. However, it's expected to debut well before HBO's Confederate.
