Nine people are dead and at least 26 injured following a mass shooting early Sunday in a popular nightlife area in Dayton, Ohio.

CNN reports a gunman opened fire around 1 a.m. on East 5th Street in the city's Oregon District.

According to police, the suspect, who has not yet been identified, was shot and killed by officers.

Dayton Deputy Director and Assistant Chief of Police Lt. Col. Matt Carper told CNN the shooter fired multiple rounds from a "long gun." It is believed the suspect was making his way toward a bar called Ned Peppers.

Though many lost their lives or were injured, Carper says the incident could have been much worse-- the incident was over quickly as police were already patrolling the area when the gunshots began.

Dayton mayor Nan Whaley said in a news conference the shooter was wearing body armor, used a “.223 high-capacity” gun and had additional magazines with him, CNN reports.

This follows a mass shooting in El Paso, Texas at a Walmart and shopping center in which 20 people were killed and dozens injured.
