Childish Gambino takes home a big award.

On Sunday (June 23), it was announced that Gambino won Video of the Year for his mesmerizing “This Is America” video at the 2019 BET Awards at Los Angeles's Microsoft Theatre.

The honor was announced after the four-hour-long BET Awards telecast was over. Nevertheless, the rapper's video was arguably the most talked-about video of 2018.

Directed by his longtime collaborator Hiro Murai, the visual opens with a shocking scene of Gambino shooting a man whose head was covered in a hood. From there, Gambino and several school children continue to dance for the camera while chaos and mayhem erupt behind them. Overall, it's a jarring work of art that people think highlights a myriad of societal issues including gun violence, police brutality, social-media indulgence and Black rage against injustice.

Back in February, Gambino racked up four Grammy wins for "This Is America." The song, which also features ab-libs from Young Thug, Quavo, 21 Savage, BlocBoy JB and Slim Jxmmi, nabbed trophies for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Rap/Sung Performance and Best Music Video.

Gambino is reportedly working on his fourth studio LP but details about the recording are cloaked in secrecy. The Grammy-winning rapper’s next album will be his first under his new label, RCA, in conjunction with his management team Wolf + Rothstein, and will be his last musical project under the Childish Gambino rap moniker.

Congratulations to Childish Gambino.
