Drake may not have a response to Joe Budden’s disses but he did have some words about the continual state-sanctioned police killings of black people. On Wednesday evening (July 6), the Canadian-born rapper said he simply couldn’t hold his tongue any longer, and needed to speak about his “second home” following the police shooting of 37-year-old father, Alton Sterling.

“When I saw the video of Alton Sterling being killed it left me feeling disheartened, emotional and truly scared,” Drizzy wrote. “I woke up this morning with a strong need to say something.”

He then says that’s impossible to ignore the “strained relationship” between black and brown communities and law enforcement, which remains as “strained” now as it was decades ago.

“No one begins their life as a hashtag. Yet the trend of being reduced to one continues,” he wrote before adding that believes “open and honest dialogue” is the first step to addressing police violence against people of color.

When a second video surfaced, allegedly showing that Sterling did not have a weapon in his hand, and was being restrained when he was shot at point-blank range in the chest, the reaction on social media was swift and heated.

“This is real and I’m concerned,” Drake wrote in his post. “Concerned for the safety of my family, my friends, and any human being who could fall victim to this pattern.”
