Muskegon County residents are ringing in the new year with a new lakeshore park. Formerly the property of Nugent Sand Company in Norton Shores, Dune Harbor Park is officially set to open to the public this spring.

According to the AP, Muskegon County officials and Nugent Sand Company have closed on the purchase of 214 acres for Dune Harbor Park on December 16th. The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grant helped in the acquirement of the property included in terms that the park must open to the public within 90 days.

This is a victory for the Land Conservancy of West Michigan, which is one of the main driving forces behind the purchase of the new park. As stated on their website, the 377-acre Nugent Sand property is one of the largest, most unique natural landscapes in the region. The site of a former sand mine, it features hilly forested dunes, two large manmade lakes, and a stretch of beautiful Lake Michigan beach.

The County is working with the community to envision of Dune Harbor Park could become. They want a park that prioritizes access, recreation and conservation. Dune Harbor Park will be a non-motorized boats beach. Leaving recreation options of kayaking and hiking as main attractions.

Dune Harbor Park will be developing two parking lots in the spring. There will be a lot off of Lincoln across from Southwood Avenue in Muskegon. The southeren will be closer to the highway, at the end of Seminole Road near Norton Hills Road in Norton Shores. Expect those lots to be paved next March or April.

More details about the opening plan for Dune Harbor Park will be shared with the public in February.
