Saturday is the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and Grand Valley State University will be holding a flag memorial.

It's hard to believe the 911 attacks were 20 years ago. I remember it like it was yesterday. Like you, I know where I was, who the first person who called me, watching it unfold on television then going into work and having to inform the public.

If you are looking for a place to pay tribute to those who lost their lives from the attack, for those who lost their lives fighting after the attack and those who survived and lost loved ones, GVSU will be placing 2,977 flags on their campus in Allendale, Michigan, to represent each person who lost their life during the attacks.

The flags will be located on the East lawn of the Kirhof Center. Here is a link for the map of the GVSU campus in case you are unfamiliar.

GVSU Student Senate members are the ones who organized the event. Many of them were too young at the time to really remember what went on during the 9/11 attacks but all understand and feel the impact of this terrible tragedy.

Students will be writing letters to thank veterans while they are inside of Lubbers Stadium between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. during tonight's football when the Grand Valley State Lakers take on Colorado State-Pueblo.

According to WOOD, the vice president of public relations for the Student Senate Eldon Pearson said, "whether it be people and individuals who still live among us today who are still suffering from illnesses or injuries that came from the 9/11 attaches as well, it is really, really important to offer our campus community an opportunity to come together to reflect on just the gravity and the magnitude that these attaches had on our country."

The flags will be able to be viewed until 8 p.m. on Saturday night.
