GR Teams Are The Last Two Standing In Baseball’s Division 2
With the Tigers and Whitecaps struggling, here's some GOOD local baseball news! The state high school Division 2 championship will be between two Grand Rapids schools.
When The Dust Cleared, Only Christian And Forest Hills Eastern Are Still Standing
The Eagles of Christian and the Hawks from Eastern will get up early on Saturday in East Lansing to settle the state's D2 baseball bragging rights. They will play in the Division 2 championship game Saturday at 9:00am at McLane Stadium on the campus of MSU in East Lansing. Surprisingly, the two teams never played during the regular season.
Two other local teams, Forest Hills Northern in Division 1 boys baseball, and Calvin Christian in girls softball had semi-final games Friday. Those results were not final at press time.
Christian Opened Up The Day With A 9-1 Rout Of Grosse Ile
The Eagles opened up the Thursday morning semi-finals by getting out the heavy artillery and blasting the Red Devils of Grosse Ile from downriver Detroit, 9-1, to earn their berth in the finals.
A big seven run sixth inning propelled the Christian win, with the Eagles Ty Uchman and Alex Koval each getting two-run doubles and Josh Winkle putting a triple to the wall to drive in another. Kyle Remington was the beneficiary of the big inning, picking up the pitching win.
The Eagles are now 27-8 on the season.
“We’ve been on a hot streak lately,” Uchman told Second Half. “There’s energy and when we have that, we can do a lot of good things. That’s really helped us.”
Eastern Rides The Arm Of Jacob Pallo To Title Game
Pallo came within four puts of a no-hitter in hurling a huge shut out Thursday, as the Hawks topped Goodrich from the Flint area to make it an all-GR final. Only a bloop single with two outs in the ninth ruined the no-no for Pallo.
Pallo wound up a perfect 10-0 on the season, while the team is now 38-4.
The Hawks squeezed a run across in the bottom of the second on a single from Brian Messing which drove in Walter Brockie for the only run they would need.
They added one in the third and fourth and three in the sixth to secure their spot in Saturday's final.
