Grand Haven Getting the Jump on Spring Flooding
Grand Haven, Michigan, is wasting no time in getting a head start on spring flooding.
According to WOOD, spring flooding can cause a lot of property damage and the city of Grand Haven is getting proactive in the fight against high lake and river levels.
A resident in Grand Haven, Mike Geukes said, "we'll have a lot of standing water right here and when you go around the corner, this intersection sometimes gets maybe up to 2 feet deep."
Another neighbor, Krista Wexall said, "I think it's going to be a lot harder this year. It's affecting a lot of people and their businesses and some people are losing homes."
Even the city has had property damage due to the high water levels of the past year. Water levels have consistently cut off access to businesses, city boat launches and have caused millions in damage to roads.
Anticipating even higher water levels come this spring, the city has starting a sandbag program so folks can get the jump on areas that are prone to high water. The county has been delivering sandbags to area fire departments in areas known to get hit first by high water.
Training will be offered March 11 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety's Columbus Street Parking lot. The training will inform residents on the use of sandbags with help from the Army Corps.
March 16 will be the day you can begin getting your free sandbags to help protect your property. Since materials are limited you may want to get on the sandbag request list by calling 616-843-3460.
