While responding to an assault incident, a police cruiser from the Grand Rapids Police Department was stolen Tuesday night, 10/4.

WOOD-TV reports that police are now looking for the suspect. GRPD was on scene, around 9 p.m., at Benjamin Ave SE regarding a man who had been assaulted.

As police went to help the shooting victim, a sergeant left the keys to the cruiser inside the vehicle."

That's when the man took the cop car and drove it around the block. He then left the car at Alexander and Fuller and walked away. According to police, the man had an apparent mental illness and have had a run-in with him before.

The cruiser was not damaged but police are looking for the suspect whom they describe as a white male with short hair, in his early 20's and about 5'8.

A sergeant told WZZM that leaving keys in the car running is not normal but it was a serious matter when they found the assault victim.

Anyone with information is asked to call the GRPD at 616.456.3400 or the Silent Observer at 616.774.2345.
