As we’re now seeing that most of the community firework shows that we’re used to attending for the 4th of July holiday are canceled, more people are deciding to host firework shows at home for their friends and family. There are a few things GRPD wants you to keep in mind.

They posted on their Facebook page some fireworks safety tips and some laws about when it’s legal to actually shoot off fireworks.

I know in my neighborhood on the northwest side of town it seems like we’ve been shooting off fireworks since about, I don’t know, the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Seriously EVERY single night there's a big display happening somewhere - even well past midnight. Although according to the GRPD post, it’s technically only legal to shoot off the fireworks in the city of Grand Rapids between June 29 and July 4th, and you have to be done shooting off the fireworks at 11:45 pm. Anything outside of those dates and past 11:45 pm could result in a fine. And I think the keyword is COULD not that you necessarily will. (still, be a cool neighbor and wait until June 29th.)

Above that, though there are some things to keep in mind while you’re shooting your fireworks since probably more people than normal this year will be buying and shooting fireworks.  I mean rule #1 is don't blow off your fingers, but Grand Rapids Police had some more practical tips to keep you and any kids or pets around safe.

Safety tips from GRPD,

• Never allow young children to handle fireworks
• Older children should use them only under close adult supervision
• Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol
• Never hold lighted fireworks in your hands
• Only use them away from people, houses and flammable material
• Never point or throw fireworks at another person
• Only light one device at a time & maintain a safe distance after lighting
• Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks
• Soak both spent & unused fireworks in water before discarding
• Keep a bucket of water close to extinguish fireworks that don't go off or in case of fire
• Never use illegal fireworks
