Grand Valley State University will attempt to set a new world record for largest periodic table on Saturday, Oct. 19.

The event will run from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the Kelly Family Sports Center on GVSU's Allendale campus. The public is welcome to come for the whole event or visit periodically.

The world record attempt is a collaborative effort of more than 100 businesses, high schools, colleges and organizations from Michigan and around the world. Together, the groups created 118 blocks representing the elements including atomic number, element name, element symbol and atomic weight.

The final project will be about 108 yards wide.

The world record attempt celebrates the 150th anniversary of the creation of the periodic table.
