A unique program needs teams of two to four adults to spend two weeks at a Michigan lighthouse this summer.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is now accepting applications for their Tawas Point Lighthouse Keeper Program. Lighthouse keepers are needed from May 1 through Oct. 29, 2019, at Tawas Point Lighthouse in Tawas Point State Park off Tawas Bay in Lake Huron.

The lighthouse keeper program needs teams of two, three or four adults who can commit to a two-week stay at the lighthouse. It helps if you have knowledge of lighthouse lore or Great Lakes history, but it is not required. Lighthouse keepers must be able to climb up and down 85 lighthouse stairs and have excellent customer service and public speaking skills.

Lighthouse keepers will greet visitors, give tours and provide information about the lighthouse. They will also be responsible for routine cleaning and maintenance. Each person staying must pay a $75 fee and provide about 35 hours of service each week.

Lighthouse keepers will stay in the second story of the keeper's quarters attached to the lighthouse. There are two bedrooms which sleep up to four adults, a modern kitchen, bath and laundry.

Applications will be accepted through Feb. 1.
