It’s Banned Books Week But What Books Are on the Banned List?
This week is "Banned Books Week" and one local retailer has their banned books on display, but what books are on the list?
What is Banned Books Week?
Banned Books Week is not what it sounds like here in America. It's actually an annual awareness campaign that is promoted by the American Library Association that celebrates the freedom to read.
Banned Books Week is about the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them and allowing individuals to develop their own conclusions and opinions.
How Many Books Are Banned in the United States?
There are 1,648 books that are either banned or being challenged. Some are banned from libraries while others are banned from public schools. Some of the big titles are Animal Farm, Enders Game, Of Mice and Men, Stamped, The Giving Tree, the Hunger Games, The Witches, and To Kill a Mockingbird. Certainly, these are books that people have read and will continue to read but are nonetheless on the list.
