Double check before you eat that sandwich!

An earlier recall of deli meat due to possible listeria contamination has been expanded to include 7 million pounds of product. The products are believed to be behind a listeria outbreak in 13 states in which more than thirty people have gotten sick and two have died.

Boar's Head Liver and Deli Meat Recall Due to Listeria Concerns

The FDA announced on July 26 that Boar's Head Provisions Co. is recalling all liverwurst product currently in stores because it may be contaminated with L. monocytogenes. The company also recalled deli meat products produced on the same line and on the same day as the liverwurst. At that time, the recall included approximately 207,528 pounds of products.

On July 30, Boards Head expanded the recall to include approximately 7 million additional pounds of ready to eat meat and poultry products.

Listeriosis can be a serious and sometimes fatal infection in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Although healthy people may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

What's Products are Included in the Boar's Head Recall?

Initially Boar's Head is recalled ready-to-eat liverwurst products that were produced between June 11, 2024, and July 17, 2024, and have a 44-day shelf life.

  • 3.5-lb. loaves in plastic casing, or various weight packages sliced in retail delis, containing “Boar’s Head Strassburger Brand Liverwurst MADE IN VIRGINIA.” The products shipped to retailers bear sell by dates ranging July 25, 2024, to Aug. 30, 2024, printed on the side of the packaging.

The other ready-to-eat deli meat products were produced on June 27, 2024 and include Boar’s Head Virginia ham, Italian cappy style ham, extra hot Italian cappy style ham, bologna, beef salami, steakhouse roasted bacon, garlic bologna, and beef bologna. The products have the establishment number “EST. 12612”. The bacon has a sell by date of August 15, all the others a sell by date of August 10. You can check out the labels here.

The recall expansion includes 71 products such as ham, bologna, hot dogs, and more produced between May 10, 2024, and July 29, 2024 under the Boar's Head and Old Country brand names. They have sell-by dates ranging from July 29, 2024 through Oct. 17, 2024. The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is concerned these items could still be in consumer's refrigerators and in retail deli cases. They should not be consumed or sold. Throw the recalled items away or return them to where you bought them.

If you did buy a recalled product, you are urged to clean your refrigerator thoroughly.

Multistate Listeria Outbreak Linked to Deli Meats

The problem was discovered when FSIS was notified that liverwurst collected by the Maryland Health Department tested positive for  L. monocytogenes. Further testing of unopened product at a retail store in Maryland was conducted. The liverwurst tested positive for the outbreak stain.

FSIS, the CDC, and state health departments are currently investigating the multi-state outbreak of of L. monocytogenes infections linked to deli meats.

So far 34 people have gotten sick in 13 states. Thirty-three people have been hospitalized and two have died.
