It’s no small task keeping teens busy once school is out for the summer. You might already know Grand Rapids offers free summer camps for kids ages 6 to 12. But there’s also something built specifically for older kids that’s worth paying attention to.

I grew up in South Haven, and I remember those summers pretty clearly. A lot of time was spent just driving around with friends, looping through downtown and cruising along Lake Michigan. Was it fun? Absolutely. But it was also a lot of unstructured time, and looking back, it wouldn’t have taken much for a “wrong place, wrong time” situation to happen.

Grand Rapids' It Takes a Village Program

That’s part of why The City of Grand Rapids launched "It Takes a Village" back in 2024. The free summer program is for teens ages 12 to 17, offering safe, structured activities on weekend nights.

The goal is to reduce teen violence by giving young people a safe place to go, stay active, and connect with others. More than 400 teens took part last summer.

After hearing feedback from families and community partners, the city expanded the program for 2026 with more activities, more locations, and more nights.

What I think is especially cool is It Takes a Village goes beyond sports and arts and crafts. Not every kid wants to play basketball or make something with glue sticks. Some want music. Some want poetry. Some want to hang out, try something creative, or even explore career ideas. Kids have different interests, and this program seems built with that in mind.
