How Safe is it to Surf Lake Superior in the Autumn?
Typically surfing is done in the ocean but people surf on Lake Superior, but how safe is it?

When I think of surfing I think of Hawaii and Australia where the big waves and warmer temperatures are. Oh, I almost forgot, and big sharks. The latter is why I never had the desire to surf.

I have seen people trying to surf on Lake Michigan but I have never seen anyone go a long way or catch a wave like you would see in Hawaii or California. Every year I hear about people surfing in the late fall and winter on Lake Superior which I think is nuts because the water temperature is almost unbearable in July, I can't imagine how cold that would be in December.

Most of the posters on this Reddit thread warned the man about surfing Lake Superior. Some people surf the lake in the winter but are highly skilled and experienced in the sport. The video below documents the man most famous for it.
The consensus is it's not safe unless you have the right gear and experience and even then the most experienced surfer will tell you there are serious risks.
