Memorial Day is behind us, which means Michigan beach season is officially here. Soon enough, it’ll be time for warm sun, cool breezes, and long days spent floating in Michigan’s incredible lakes. Honestly, few things beat summer in the Mitten State. But with the Great Lakes and thousands of inland lakes, picking Michigan's best beach is no easy task.

That didn’t stop USA Today and 10Best from trying.

A panel of travel experts nominated 18 Michigan beaches for the 2026 USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice poll, highlighting everything from massive Lake Michigan dunes to scenic stretches along Lake Superior and Lake Huron. Then, it was up to the public to narrow the list down to the top ten.

I was lucky enough to grow up in South Haven, so South Beach on Lake Michigan will always have a special place in my heart.

Which is why I’m especially excited to see South Beach officially land at No. 1 on this year’s list of the best beaches in Michigan!

It actually unseated another Lake Michigan Beach that held the top spot for the past two years.

That No. 1 ranking also comes with some pretty glowing praise from USA Today’s 10Best readers’ poll:

South Beach, an ADA-accessible beach in South Haven, has everything you'd need for a day of fun in the sun: grills, a picnic area, playground, restrooms, and views of the red South Haven lighthouse. Visitors who become hungry after a day of fun in the sun can grab a bite to eat at the concession stand.

I'd add in that South Beach has an awesome pirate-ship themed splash pad for the kiddos as well. It's a favorite of my nieces! Also, for the first time in more than 20 years, lifeguards will be patrolling South Beach.

Lake Michigan beaches did dominate the final rankings once again, but there are plenty of other standout spots around the state that earned love from voters too. From iconic lighthouse views and towering dunes to quiet stretches of shoreline perfect for relaxing, the list really shows why Michigan is home to some of the best freshwater beaches in the country.

This is also where things always get interesting. Ask five Michiganders to name the best beach in the state and you will probably get five different answers!
