Every year, Michigan experiences at least one major snowfall. Even last winter, when we received a shockingly small amount of snow overall, we experienced one week of insane snowfall in January (though it did melt away the following week).

So it's only a matter of time before Michigan gets hit by a wild snowstorm from our signature Lake Effect snow. Thankfully, we already have an idea of when we could expect that storm to hit.

Farmer's Almanac

Since George Washington was president back in 1792, The Old Farmer's Almanac has released its forecasts for the upcoming year for those "who don't like the question of weather left up in the air".

While predicting the weather is a notoriously hit-or-miss business (you ever cancel plans because rain is in the forecast only for it to be a beautiful day?), the Farmer's Almanac has an 80% success rate across its 232 years.

So, When Should We Expect Snow?

Across the country, many "temperatures will be up and snowfall down throughout most of the United States"...but not here in Michigan. Michigan can expect a return to form with a cold, wet winter, the opposite of last winter. The Almanac says we should expect a big winter storm at the end of January, so have your shovels ready for any time between January 20-27.

How accurate that prediction is is anyone's guess, but it seems there is a general feeling that you'll need to bundle up pretty early this year.
