Michigan Has 3 Of The Top 50 Rattiest Cities In America

For several years, Chicago has led the country as the rattiest city in America. Los Angeles ranks number one for rats, but Michigan has 3 cities in the rattiest top 50.

When I think of rats, New York City always pops into my mind, because that was the only city of all the U.S. where I saw rats in the open all the time. Almost all cities have rat problems, and usually the bigger the city, the bigger the problem.

How the Rattiest Cities are Determined

I'm still shocked to see that there are cities in America that have more rats than New York City, but there are two, Los Angeles is number one and Chicago is number two.

Every year the pest control company Orkin releases its annual report for the rattiest cities in the United States. Orkin determines the number of rats in a city based on the number or service calls made to residences and business from the past year.

For over a decade the city of Chicago has been number one when it comes to rat service calls. Michigan has three cities that made the top 50 rattiest cities list.

According to Orkin.com, Michigan has three cities in the top 50 for most rats in America, and two of those cities landed in the top 25 on the list.

Flint moved up a notch from last year making the city number 41 on the rattiest cities in the U.S. Surprisingly, Grand Rapids jumped up two spots this year to number 25, and it was Detroit that led Michigan for the most rats moving up a slot to number 7.

Hopefully, Michigan will see a decline in 2026, but odds are with warmer temperatures the problem may only get worse.
