When it comes to gorgeous buildings in the Mitten State, what comes to mind for you? Several often pop up in articles praising Michigan architecture, like Meadow Brook Hall, historic house museum, cultural center and events and wedding venue in Rochester Michigan.

Venues like the Masonic Temple in Detroit also receive high praise.

Their pick for Michigan? The Guardian Building in Detroit.

This Art Deco masterpiece at 500 Griswold Street in Downtown Detroit’s Financial District was built in 1928 and finished in 1929. It was originally called the Union Trust Building and served as the flagship headquarters for the banking group.

The exterior is made of Indiana limestone and features carvings and sculptures that speak to Detroit's historic industries – automotive and manufacturing. Architect Wirt C. Rowland and the more than 40 artisans that worked on the building drew inspiration from Native American, Aztec, and Mayan cultures.

The Guardian features painted murals and ceilings, intricate tile work, mosaic and stained glass, marble fixtures, and a vaulted ceiling.

Designed by Michigan architects, erected by Michigan contractors, and built by Michigan artisans: the Guardian Building is virtually a temple of Michigan commerce and ingenuity.

Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989, the Guardian building is owned by Wayne County and serves as its headquarters.

The Guardian Building also hosts events and has office, retail, and restaurant space available for lease.
