Two Michigan Hotels Make Michelin’s List of Best Places to Stay in the U.S.

For over 100 years, the Michelin guide has been pointing diners toward exceptional restaurants. Now Michelin is helping travelers find the best hotels in the country - and two are in Michigan!

According to CBS Detroit, in April, Michelin released their first ever list of One, Two, and Three Key hotels throughout the United States. The list was updated in September.

Extensive research was conducted over the span of four years to determine the ranking.

Michelin says the list is comprised of the most outstanding hotels in the U.S. "that significantly add to your experience as a traveler, each vetted and judged excellent in five categories: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting."

The two Michigan hotels to receive Michelin keys are Shinola Hotel in Detroit and the Daxton Hotel in Birmingham. Each received on Michelin Key.

The Shinola Hotel is a boutique hotel, owned by the same company that makes watches, bikes, and leather goods. It opened downtown Detroit at 1400 Woodward Ave. in 2019.

Michelin describes it as "stylish" and "youth-oriented". You'll find handcrafted millwork, custom mattresses, and wallpaper inspired by patterns found during the renovation process. There are six food and beverage options, plus onsite shopping.

The Daxton Hotel opened at 298 S. Old Woodward in Birmingham in 2021.

The luxury hotel features more than 400 original artworks by over 80 artists from 40 countries. In public spaces you'll find elegant black marble and dark wood. 

Michelin praises The Daxton's deluxe rooms that "display echoes of multiple eras of architectural history, from Victorian ornament to Art Deco and Modernist gestures and beyond." You'll find the restaurant Madame on-site with a unique geodesic dome enveloping the bar.
