Are There Any 24-Hour Grocery Stores Left in West Michigan?
There used to be something magical about roaming the aisles of Meijer or certain Family Fare stores at 1 a.m., dodging the floor cleaners to find your wares. But, since the COVID-19 pandemic began and many stores started limiting their hours, things have changed.
Heck, the 24-hour Family Fare by my house came in clutch once when my dog got sprayed by a skunk after midnight and I needed to head there to get peroxide, baking soda, and Dawn dish soap.
Are there any 24-hour grocery stores left in West Michigan?
The short answer is "no". The long answer is "No, not really, but..." And the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Grocery Stores That Were Once Open 24-Hours in West Michigan
There used to be several local grocery chains that were open 24 hours per day (with exceptions for some holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.)
- Meijer
- Family Fare (select stores)
- D&W Fresh Markets (select stores)
- Walmart (select stores)
Now, those 24-hour grocers are nothing but a fond memory.
The good news is that while they aren't open 24 hours per day anymore, most are only closed for short periods of time.
- Meijer - open 6 a.m. - 12 a.m. daily.
- Family Fare - open 6 a.m. - 11 p.m. daily.
- D&W Fresh Markets - open at 6 a.m. daily. Some stores close at 11 p.m., some at 12 a.m.
- Walmart - open 6 a.m. - 11 p.m. daily.
Where Can You Go to Get Groceries 24 Hours Per Day in West Michigan?
Well, that all depends on what kind of groceries you're looking for. Most gas stations and many convenience stores in West Michigan are open for business 24 hours per day, seven days per week.
Many, like J&H Family Stores, Kum & Go, Meijer gas stations, and Speedway offer a limited amount of groceries and fresh foods to-go.
Do you need something like milk, crackers, a can of soup, or maybe a box of pasta? These types of stores MAY have what you need. You're obviously not going to be able to do a full-on grocery shopping trip there, but they're there in a pinch.
I was also reminded by a friend that there are Walgreens locations in West Michigan that are open 24 hours per day. They include the Walgreens on Plainfield in Grand Rapids, the Walgreens on Butternut in Holland, and the Walgreens on both Apple Ave. and Sherman Blvd. in Muskegon.
Will West Michigan Grocery Stores Ever Be Open 24 Hours Again?
Never say never, but it seems that most of these companies have realized that closing for those few hours between 11 p.m./midnight and 6 a.m. is beneficial to them and to their employees. An empty store makes it easier to clean, restock, reset, and take inventory.
