History Of Sandy The Pony At Meijer

According to the Holland Sentinal, Sandy made her debut with the opening of Meijer Thrifty Acres in 1962. The late Fred Meijer, who had a long history with horses, heard of 10-cent pony rides at a Nebraska supermarket and felt it was too much to charge kids for a ride. So, he changed it to a penny upon installing his first mechanical pony, becoming the Meijer symbol of family shopping at reasonable prices.
