Growing up as a kid I used to beg my mom to let me ride Sandy The Pony after we were done checking out with all of our groceries. The thing I loved about Meijer is that they always set out pennies so no child would miss out on the opportunity to get a ride.

History Of Sandy The Pony At Meijer
According to the Holland Sentinal, Sandy made her debut with the opening of Meijer Thrifty Acres in 1962. The late Fred Meijer, who had a long history with horses, heard of 10-cent pony rides at a Nebraska supermarket and felt it was too much to charge kids for a ride. So, he changed it to a penny upon installing his first mechanical pony, becoming the Meijer symbol of family shopping at reasonable prices.

According to Wikipedia Meijer was founded as Meijer's in Greenville, Michigan, in 1934 by Hendrik Meijer, a Dutch immigrant. Meijer was a local barber who entered the grocery business during the Great Depression. His first employees included his 14-year-old son, Frederik Meijer, who later became chairman of the company.
