Food Trucks and the shore at Lake Michigan seem to go hand in hand. They allow local entrepreneurs to bring their dishes and treats to a group of hungry and happy people without having to afford costly waterfront property. But a possible future ordinance in South Haven could allow them to hang around year round.

Currently South Haven city commissioners are considering adding a local ordinance regarding food trucks, which would allow them to operate within city limits from the months of November through April. Currently, food trucks have to wrap up and head out during the winter months.

Why did South Haven ban food trucks?

There are arguments on both sides that make sense as to why you would and would not want to have food trucks hanging around during the winter months.

Those who support the current food truck ordinance argue that it keeps "abandoned" food truck vehicles around town during the non-warm days when they may not be serving food, they also argue that brick and mortar businesses should have the advantage during the colder months.

However, those who are for the ordinance say that food trucks would and should be able to operate for a large chunk of the year no matter what is happening in the area weather wise, and that these food truck owners deserve a chance to own their fate year round.

The proposed changes would affect the regulatory code and zoning ordinances associated with food trucks. If these ordinances do end up passing within the South Haven city commission, food trucks would be able to operate all year going forward. The proposal also includes changes to where Food Trucks can currently park, as well as how many licenses would be given out. Those of course would be on a first come, first served basis.
