A West Michigan Cat Went Missing for 5 Years. Here’s How He Finally Found His Way Home
I love a good reunification story. Those videos online of pets reuniting with their owners at shelters bring me to tears every time. A "soldier comes home and surprises their family" video? Sobbing.
And this reunification story jumped out to me right away, both because of how long it took for this reunion to happen and how great the story behind it is.

The Timeline of a West Michigan Cat Being Reunited With His Family After 5 Years
The timeline and the story itself skip around a bit. Focus on Ferals took to social media to share the sweet story.
On April 14, 2026, a couple went to Focus on Ferals with a black cat. The sweet cat had been found inside a rental property that they own, and unfortunately, the tenant had passed away. Focus on Ferals took the cat in and, as they normally do, checked the poor baby for a microchip.

When they scanned it, they discovered that the cute little guy was registered to someone - and not the person who had previously lived in that rental. Instead, he was registered to a person named Cassie, whose listed address was just a few doors down from where the cat was found.
Focus on Ferals reached out to Cassie and learned that this was, indeed, her cat, and she had been looking for him for a long time.
A Move, An Escape, a Long Wait, and a Reunion
This is where the timeline jumps back. And not just a little bit. All the way back to 2021, when Cassie and her family were moving out of their home in West Michigan to relocate three hours away. According to Focus on Ferals, the frightened feline escaped from a carrier while they were in the process of moving, got spooked, and ran off.
Cassie and her family tried to find him, but had no luck. Her husband even stayed back for another six weeks, hoping that the cat would eventually make its way home. But that never happened.
When they learned that the cat, named Night, had been found all of these years later, they were ecstatic. They made the six-hour round-trip journey to pick up their furry family member and bring him to their new (to Night, at least) home.
What to Do if Your Cat Escapes
Focus on Ferals also took this opportunity to share some tips on what to do if your cat escapes and runs off. They say that you should search for them on foot in the morning and in the evening. It's also suggested that you post online in lost and found pet groups, as well as any neighborhood groups. Knock on doors - see if your neighbors have seen your cat. Put up fliers around the area with a picture and your contact information. And, of course, be sure to check with your local animal shelters.
