How Can You Make Fudge and Pronounce Mackinac Island at the Same Time?
Mackinac Island is one of Michigan's treasures. It, as we all know, it is a step back in time. An Island where you can leave your stresses behind and listen to the clip-clop of horse hooves down the streets while eating fudge. Congratulations, you now an official "Fudgie!"
But the name, Mackinac, presents a problem of being able to pronounce for non-Michiganders. After all we have Mackinaw City on the Lower Peninsula, but Mackinac Island in Lake Huron, both pronounced the same. Crazy, right?
And why is that? It's a long, long store dating back to Native American, British and French influences, that began around 1715. Look it up if you want.

But, trying to pronounce Mackinac drives people crazy if your are not from around here.
It sure did this You Tube guy. He make food from viewers home towns and took up the challenge of making fudge by request from a guy here in Michigan. Did he do it?
There have been so may slaughtered pronunciations of Mackinac. A Reddit contributor wanted to visit Mekaneck Island when he was a kid, the home of He-Man, so he thought. He was crushed when his parents wouldn't take him to meet He-Man! So sad.
But I think Michigan has some of the most mispronounced cities in the country.
The website Awesome Mitten.com says "hearing out-of-town tourists mispronounce place names is nothing new for Michiganders. After all, not everyone can say names like Schoenherr, Gratiot, Detroit, Ontanagon, and Sault Ste. Marie correctly on the first try."
It's Mackinaw, Mackinac Island lovers!
