Scary! It Has Been “Snowmageddon” in Sault Ste. Marie!
So, you think we in West Michigan and Grand Rapids have had a lot of snow this season? Ha! We have had a "dusting" compared to Sault. Ste. Marie, and they continue to dig out.
According to the National Weather Service, since this Tuesday, January 6, the Soo, as we say it, has had 98.6 inches of snow! That is over eight feet of snow!
Yes, they are used to it, sort of, but this season has become the second snowiest since the world began. Okay, maybe not quite, but at least December was the second snowiest December on record, more than 71 inches fell. Oh my snow blower!
The Soo's normal seasonal total is around 120 inches, so boy are they on track to break that number.
Will it be a record for them? Not by a long shot. Their record snow fall was in 1995-96 when 222 inches fell. I can't even imagine that.
The National Weather Service so understates the event, too. They call this December as a very snowy year. They termed 1995-96 as extremely snowy! You think?

Around here we have had about 30 inches of snow so far, although with the rain and big melt, you wouldn't know it.
Don't forget, though, we have had our own "snowmageddon." Remember 1978? I sure do since we were snowed in for three day because Grand Rapids got more than 16 inches on January 26 and the city was overwhelmed and at a near standstill.
But, it was 2008 that Grand Rapids actually got the most snow in a season with nearly 150 inches falling.
By the way, that same year, Sault Ste. Marie got more than 200 inches!
I'm pretty good with our 30 inches this year. What about you?
