Attend a New Year's Eve party: Several bars and clubs have special New Year's Eve parties planned. These events usually feature live music, dancing, and special drinks and appetizers.

Go ice skating: Consider heading to Rosa Parks Circle for some skating. Skating will be available until 9:30 pm on New Year's Eve. As of Thursday, the ice was still solid despite the warmer temperatures. 34,000 feet of refrigeration piping help maintain the ice in the warmer weather. Any closings will be announced on the Rosa Parks Circle Ice Rink Facebook page.

Watch a movie: If you prefer a more low-key celebration, consider spending New Year's Eve at the movies. A lot of people will want to see the latest Avatar movie -- Avatar: The Way of the Water. The PG-13 sequel is a long one at 3 hours and 12 minutes in length. There were will tickets available to see it on the IMAX in 3D at Celebration Cinema Grand Rapids North, Celebration Cinema Crossroads in Portage, or the Celebration Cinema in Lansing.

Catch a hockey game: The Grand Rapids Griffins will be to the ice on New Year's Eve to take on the Milwaukee Admirals at the Van Andel Arena. Game time is 6:00 pm. It is the 25th Annual New Year's Eve Celebration presented by Captain Morgan. There will be fireworks after the game along with a post game skate.

Have a family-friendly celebration: If you have young children, consider hosting a family-friendly celebration at home. You could set up a game night, watch a movie together, and then stay up late to watch the ball drop on TV.
