Every Saturday in the fall, the Big Ten turns into a traveling circus of marching bands, packed stadiums, questionable officiating, and grown adults screaming at 20-year-olds over a third-and-six.

But for most students at these schools, the real heavy lifting happens Monday through Friday, usually under fluorescent lights, with a laptop open and a deadline approaching.
Big Ten Schools Are More Than Sports
U.S. News & World Report ranks the nation's colleges using measures tied to academic quality and student success, including graduation and retention, faculty resources, financial resources, peer reputation, and research. The 2026 Best Colleges rankings evaluated nearly 1,700 colleges and universities using up to 17 different academic measures.
And the Big Ten makes a pretty strong case that the conference can do more than fill stadiums and arenas. Fifteen of its 18 universities rank within the nation’s top 100 National Universities, while 11 land inside the top 50.
Where Do Michigan and Michigan State Land?
For those of us in Michigan, this is where things get fun. The University of Michigan and Michigan State University both carry massive fan bases, huge alumni networks, and enough rivalry fuel to power half the state. But when the helmets come off and U.S. News starts grading academics, the conference standings look a little different.
