Elwell Mansion: The Castle of St. Louis, Michigan
The wooden Elwell Castle still sits in the Michigan town of St. Louis at the corner of M-46 and N. Delaware Street.
Built in 1884 by railroad investor Colonel John Elwell, he came to St. Louis from New Jersey to fix the financial woes of the Chicago, Saginaw, and Canada Railroad.
He leased the railroad and ended up making a fortune. With all the dough he made, he went and purchased the entire block on Delaware Street in order to build himself a huge mansion.....castle-style.....and elaborate carriage house.
With carved woodwork costing $8,000, Elwell lived here until he passed away in 1910. Afterward, it was owned by Orville Church and his family. It was renovated in 1990s and turned back into its original exquisite splendor. In 2012, the castle was purchased by Tim and Colleen (Church) Boyer.
