Popular Breakfast Spot With a Dozen Michigan Locations to Close 150 Restaurants
You may have to say goodbye to the Grand Slam Breakfast as 150 Denny's restaurants across the United States will be closing by the end of 2025.
Denny's - which currently has 12 locations in Michigan - announced during an earnings call on Tuesday (10/22) that 50 restaurants will be shuttered by the end of 2024 and an additional 100 locations will be closed in 2025.
Underperforming Restaurants to be Closed
A spokesman for Denny's said that 'underperforming locations' will be targeted for closure. Steve Dunn is the Executive Vice President and Chief Global Development officer for the corporation. He says that locations that are either too old to be remodeled and restaurants that have become unprofitable will be on the hit list.
“Some of these restaurants can be very old,” Dunn said during the investor meeting. “You think of a 70-year-old plus brand. We have a lot of restaurants that have been out there for a very long time.”
There are 12 Denny's restaurants in Michigan:
- Battle Creek
- East Lansing
- Grand Rapids
- Jackson
- Kalamazoo
- Kentwood
- Lansing
- Marshall
- Saginaw
- Taylor
- Traverse City
- Wyoming
No specific details about which restaurants are slated to be closed have been released.
Some Denny's Restaurants No Longer Open 24/7
While most locations stayed open around the clock prior to the pandemic, that requirement has since been softened. Denny's management now concedes that lifestyles have changed since 2020 and less foot traffic means it no longer makes sense for all of their restaurants to stay open 24 hours per day.
Ordering from the Kids' Menu
The restaurant also recognizes that some cash-strapped adults are ordering from Denny's kids' menu in order to save money. The company has also narrowed the scope of its menu in order to cut expenses.
