Swanson is well-known for his commitment to rehabilitation programs and giving inmates opportunities for growth as they prepare for release.

The IGNITE program - which stands for Inmate Growth Naturally and Intentionally Through Education - was put into place three years ago by Swanson. Its main objective is to help inmates learn job skills and gain the support they need to help ease their transition back into society.

Barber School in Jail

Nathaniel Menard is a Genesee County Sheriff's Deputy and also a licensed barber. Menard oversees the program and has been teaching inmates hair-cutting techniques since its inception in July.

Inmates who are interested can receive a few hours of instruction each week inside the jail.

"[The inmates] can keep these hours and it can go with them as they make their way back into the community and they find a barbershop that they can apprentice with and work toward getting their state licensing," Menard tells WNEM-TV.

Did Sheriff Swanson Really Get a Haircut in Jail?

At the end of the video below, you'll see Sheriff Chris Swanson sit down in the barber chair. But the video ends before we actually see Swanson getting a complimentary haircut from the barbers in training.

Is this a coincidence? We're not so sure.
