Can exposure impact pet owners, too?
Salmonella and Listeria exposure can cause humans to get very sick, too.
The FDA states that symptoms include:
- nausea
- vomiting
- diarrhea or bloody diarrhea
- abdominal cramping
- fever
More specifically, Salmonella can cause other severe issues for humans.
Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers. - FDA
What should you do with the recalled pet food?
Blue Ridge Beef Company told Newsweek owners should "destroy the food in a way that children, pets, and wildlife cannot access."
- Do not donate or sell the pet food.
- Do not feed any animals the food.
- Wash, sanitize all pet food bowls, cups and storage containers.
- Wash, sanitize your hands and any utensils used to handle the food.
Has this happened before with Blue Ridge Beef pet food?
It has. Back in October of 2023 and a time or two before that.
While the company's Facebook page has not been updated since 2022, their website states:
"Science is not better than nature. When man changes things from their natural state to increase profits, the food is no longer ‘real’. It becomes a man-made imitation. . ."
Perhaps the reason science is important in pet food is because humans have domesticated pets over centuries... And we don't want them to get sick (and/or die) like they might in the wild?
