According to the Consumers Energy outage map and WOOD TV, as of Tuesday at 5:45 a.m., nearly 8,000 Kalamazoo residents are without power including Western Michigan University's campus.

Several Kalamazoo schools have been affected because of the outage including Northglade Elementary, King-Westwood Elementary and Hillside Middle School. The campus of Western Michigan University has posponted classes until 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Consumers Energy says that strong winds were likely the cause. Utility company crews are working to restore the power. They hope to restore power by 8 a.m. Tuesday.
