Kellogg has announced plans to eliminate 233 jobs at the company's plant on Porter Street in Battle Creek.

The Battle Creek Enquirer reports that both salaried and hourly employees are expected to be affected.

Kellogg spokesman Kris Charles said in statement the company plans to simplify operations "by focusing each of our RTEC (ready-to-eat-cereal) plants on at least two scaled manufacturing platforms, such as rice or bran. If finalized, these changes would optimize the capacity we currently have, allow for future growth and decrease the total cost-per-pound in our RTEC network, which will improve margins."

Kellogg Co. will give union leaders the chance to study the plan and give feedback before it's finalized.

If the plan goes through, the cuts will begin early next year.

In February, Kellogg announced a new plan to move away from direct store delivery, possibly resulting in the laying off of  more than 1,100 employees nationwide, The Detroit Free Press Reports.
